Olive Anne Schmitt, 81, died Friday, Sept. 26 in Modesto.

She was born in Maywood on July 1, 1926 to Isabella Cathey Campbell Baker of Newton Mearns, Scotland and Clarence Carlton Baker of Kings Mill, Ontario, Canada. She grew up in Riverside and Los Angeles.

She graduated from John Marshall High School, Los Angeles, and graduated Cum Laude from UCLA with a degree in language. She worked for the Los Angeles Police Department prior to getting married in 1946.

Mrs. Schmitt and her husband moved to Riverbank in 1960 and she began her career as a bookroom clerk for Modesto City School District, from which she retired in 1980. She was a member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Riverbank chapter for many years. She was a dedicated volunteer with the Cancer Ladies Group, making hats and lap quilts for cancer patients. She was also a member of the Riverbank Community United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, sewing, and painting. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

She is survived by her husband, James Schmitt of Riverbank; sons and daughter-in-laws, Brent and Gwen Schmitt, Kevin and Carol Schmitt of Oakdale; five grandchildren, Renee Guce of Arizona, Jennifer Schmitt of Oakdale, Jonathan Schmitt of Calabasas, David Schmitt of Long Beach, and Katie Schmitt of Oakdale; and three great-grandchildren of Arizona.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Riverbank Masonic Lodge on Santa Fe Avenue, Riverbank.
