Even though Riverbank High School student-athletes celebrated a week-long break from classes for Thanksgiving last week, they did have a few preseason soccer and basketball games early on, as well as wrapping up fall competition.
Cross Country
A little bit of fall sports was hanging on last weekend, as the California Interscholastic Federation’s State Championship Meet was staged on Saturday, Nov. 30 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
Junior runner Giselle Fernandez represented Riverbank High on the course, coming in at fourth place in the Division 4 race, covering the 5000 meters (5k) with a time of 17.57.1.
According to RHS Athletic Director Juan Harvey, “Fernandez is the third female runner in Riverbank history to be All-State. She broke the school record by 17 seconds and her time of 17:57 is third fastest in Stanislaus County history.”
Lady Bruin Soccer
Soccer girls got to host Denair on Tuesday, Nov. 26, losing 2-0 in preseason play. They were to travel to Beyer High School in Modesto on Monday this week, then host Grace Davis on Dec. 4. They’ll be playing in the Oakdale Tournament this weekend.

Bruin Basketball
The boys team had a tough one on Tuesday, Nov. 26, on the home court. They fought hard the whole game, staying close or tying through most of the contest. Unfortunately, Central Valley from Ceres pulled ahead in the last quarter, with the Hawks winning, 61-56.
Riverbank was to welcome Sonora in for preseason play on Dec. 3, then will host the Ron Peterson Tip-Off Tournament on Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 5 through 7, this weekend.
