Valley motorists see slight break at pumps

Average gasoline prices in Modesto have fallen 8.3 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $5.54/gallon as of Monday, April 20, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Prices in Modesto are 5.4 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.02/gallon higher than a year ago.

The national average price of gasoline has fallen 9.4 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.97/gallon. The national average is up 3.9 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 87.4 cents per gallon higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

The cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $5.05/gallon on April 20 while the most expensive was $6.89, a difference of $1.84/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $4.69 while the highest was $9.79, a difference of $5.10/gallon.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $5.50/gallon, down 6.0 cents from last week’s $5.56; Oakland - $5.82, down 5.4 cents from $5.88; and San Jose - $5.80/gallon, unchanged from last week.

“Average gasoline prices declined in 48 states over the last week, while diesel prices fell in 46 states, offering a welcome break at pumps,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back five years show the highest Modesto average on April 20 was $5.41 per gallon in 2024 and the lowest was $3.82 in 2021. Highest U.S. April 20 average was $4.10 per gallon in 2022, lowest was $2.87 in 2021.
