This past week was an end of a chapter and the start of a new beginning filled with many possibilities as Riverbank Unified School District’s 2018-19 school year has come to an end. The seniors at Adelante High School, Class of 2019, were suited up in their black caps and gowns lined up in the hallway at the Ray Fauria Gym for their last walk as high school students. The small yet appreciative group of graduates have been through some challenges and persevered to be on that stage where they accepted their diplomas with pride.

Principal Rebecca Evans welcomed all, thanking the audience for their love, encouragement and support for the students. She introduced the AHS staff, Superintendent Dr. Daryl Camp, and the Board of Trustees. Salutatorian Tianna Ruelas led the guests through the flag salute and Teacher in Charge Erika Ramos gave the class a heartfelt speech.

Ruelas gave a speech where she expressed gratitude for the second chance she was given adding that she is the only one in charge of her future. She ended her speech with a Bible verse and congratulated fellow members in the Class of 2019.

Valedictorian Vanessa Ruiz also gave a speech Thursday evening, May 23 thanking her parents, friends and teachers for their support and helping her make it to graduation day. She credited the staff for keeping the students focused and inspiring them stating that they were able to build genuine relationships with them. Quoting Winston Churchill, calling her class amazing, Ruiz ended her speech with congratulations.

“I can now address you as graduates,” stated Ramos during the ceremony. “You made it.”

Ramos addressed the guests and the Adelante students during the ceremony acknowledging the battles that they have fought and won which opens the door for many possibilities.

After Evans presented the Adelante Class of 2019 to Dr. Camp, he recognized the staff for their outstanding work and gave them a big thank you. He also thanked the parents, families, and students. AHS Teacher Kristi Santos has retired after 19 years of service to RUSD and Dr. Camp presented her with a plaque.

Superintendent Dr. Camp accepted the Class of 2019 with applause and cheers as the graduates made their way to the back of the gym. They got in a circle and tossed their caps in the air for their ‘final hurrah’ as high school seniors.
